Sildenafil
Sildenafil is a medication primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) and pulmonary arterial hypertension. It is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, which means it works by increasing blood flow to certain areas of the body.
For the treatment of erectile dysfunction, sildenafil helps relax the muscles in the walls of blood vessels, particularly in the penis. This relaxation allows increased blood flow, leading to an erection when combined with sexual stimulation. It does not cause an erection on its own and requires sexual arousal to be effective.
Sildenafil is most commonly known by the brand name Viagra. It was first developed by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer and became widely prescribed for ED after its approval by regulatory authorities.
In addition to its use for erectile dysfunction, sildenafil is also used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). In this condition, the drug helps relax the blood vessels in the lungs, reducing the workload on the heart and improving exercise capacity.
It’s important to note that sildenafil can have interactions with certain medications and may have contraindications for individuals with specific health conditions. Therefore, it should only be used under the supervision and prescription of a qualified healthcare professional. They can assess whether it is safe and appropriate for an individual based on their medical history and overall health.
